Re.; To Mr. UK UMG PP No. 2…
One can rail at the dark, or one can provide a clear call to action, I.e., outline directly steps one expects the other to carry out to bring the unpleasantness to a conclusion. Unfortunately, not being a marketer, Dear Old Uncle Bobby is expecting another to figure it out. This is unlikely. As advertising teaches, it’s better to directly outline the expectations.

Mr. BillSabab’s well-intentioned post seems to contain several assumptions. A sample selection…

1.    There are only two courses of action.
2.    RF/DGM/KC/Panegyric/George the Good Lawyer Man have not clearly outlined steps towards resolution of our various current disputes with UMG (this over the course of the past five years).
3.    RF is expecting someone else to figure out possible steps to conclude the unpleasantness.
6.    Marketers know the right steps to conclude unpleasantnesses.
4.    If RF were a marketer, he would also have The Knowledge.
5.    But RF is not aware of marketing.
7.    Advertising teaches; alternatively, we can learn from advertising.
8.    Providing a clear call to action is the way forward.

I do not assume of Mr. BillSabab that he has extensive professional dealings with UMG, nor of the wider music industry. Test question: what is The Small Artist Discount?

I do assume that Mr. BillSabab is a decent man, an innocent wanderer into the everyday minefield of the music industry, one whose life is not deeply affected by it, and who believes the industry to act (to some extent at least) rationally and in a businesslike fashion. Decent people, who resolve conflicts decently, tend to expect other people to resolve conflicts decently. Our dealings with UMG show little evidence of common decency, accountability, owning-up, distributive justice nor goodwill.

Perhaps Mr. BillSabab would like to present his own direct steps to the conclusion of unpleasantness, that we can learn from them, and we can perhaps present them to UMG? UMG may well prefer them as an alternative to presenting royalty accounts some 19 years late on Summers & Fripp.

Moving along associationally…

Light drives out the dark. Do not concern yourself with driving out the dark: concern yourself with bringing in the light.

DGM and GC are forms of bringing in the light. Nevertheless, currently, a torch needs to be shone on dark places, IMO. One of the darkest of dark places, in current large-scale turmoils, is the moral hazard arising in the way forward for financial services. If profits, there are bonuses; if losses, taxpayers and small persons pick up the tab. This has been so to a greater / lesser extent since c. 1982, and only one example of Power Possessors abusing the trust placed in them and acting without responsibility.

So, railing at the dark? Not much use, I agree. But a DGM bonus in 7 figures (for Venality, Heartlessness, Raging and Unaccountable Leadership) would enable me to put up with quite a lot of dark railings from aggrieved DGM innocents. A sounder strategy: to provide models for alternative forms of action and behaviour; eg the wider DGM operation and declared Business Policy. Another form of action, with an historical pedigree: Rough Music - shining a loud, rattling torch on indefensible practices. Why Rough Music? Because hypocrisy, at a certain level, offends our sense of common decency.

Is this a call to action? Well, if we all adhere to a declared standard of good/best practice, while shining torches, the way ahead may brightly glisten.

Not a marketer? Well, my Sister is much better than her Brother in this field. But, I have stood on my feet and earned a living (albeit only receiving a fraction of the income) by mostly sitting down in front of the public over a period of 42 years; a credential of sorts. And being brought up to take over our Father’s firm of estate agents was a practical education.

What steps lie ahead? Some have been declared in this Diary/ How about: straightforwardness, transparency, accountability, owning up, distributive justice, fairness and common decency? A call to abide by these simple norms has been mostly ignored by the large corporations with whom we have dealings.

Precessional Time and the Evolution of Consciousness How Stories Create the World by Richard Heath (p147)…

We live in a world in which all achievements are simple victories of large-scale, superior forces, and this is the ruling political metaphor of force majeure. Problems are solved deterministically, statistically and materially. The evidence is that this leads to catastrophic and unpredictable outcomes because the world is not linear.

Let’s hear it for small, mobile, independent units that aspire to Intelligence?

The Mother of the bridegroom is our cousin Gillian, daughter of Auntie Evie, our Mother’s Sister. She is 56 and a great grandmother. Her son Matthew is a Navy man, marrying a Royal Navy officer, Charlene, who has relatives in the Wimborne area. Charlie was the first woman to command a Royal Navy vessel in a battle zone. A Welsh choir, an avenue of Navy swords. Wonderful.

A mingling of the families afterwards, myself returning home ahead of the reception, leaving Sistery and the families having a fine do.
